Sports Massage Therapy Myth: “No Pain, No Gain…”

There are a number of myths surrounding sports massage therapy and who can benefit from it. Here is a short list of these myths:

  • I need a referral to see a Sports Massage Therapist This is a Myth

  • Sports Massage Therapy is only for sports people. This is a Myth.

  • Sports Massage Therapy is only for sports injuries.  This is another Myth

  • No Pain, No Gain… Sports Massage Therapy has to be painful (We’re tackling this one today!)

  • Sports Massage Therapy is only for  athletes

 And, there are more!

So, let’s get started by busting one of those myths right now!

 “NO PAIN, NO GAIN”

Many of us are guilty of over-promoting the “No Pain, No Gain” mentality. THANKFULLY, things are changing in the world of Sports Massage Therapy! Majority of treatments today are relatively painless. The excruciating “No Pain, No Gain” mentality is getting replaced by a new slogan:

"No pain No gain"

You can cause yourself injury by following the advice.

Pain is the signal that physical harm is being caused. This is  especially not required when you're rehabbing following a physical injury

Receiving 'good pain' during massage is acceptable.

Severe pain, new or sharp, is not part of the massage process to return to full health

kNOw PAIN, kNOw GAIN.

To overcome persistent pain, it is necessary to understand your pains and learn how to grow beyond the pains. Understanding your pain, discovering what the triggers are, and understanding how to get back to being YOU are all important factors for your recovery. Personal knowledge is power.  Person centred  therapy that takes your needs and experiences into account is powerful.
